Week 2: The Remixed Object
When referring to "Remix" in the case of art, the idea can be applied to a variety of things. Music, objects, photos, and ideas, can all be "Remixed" together in order to create something new. Remix, in a general sense, is when an artist takes two or more objects that already exist, and combine them to create something new. Almost all remixes border the line of intellectual property, and to this day it's still hard to distinguish who the finished product belongs to. The idea of remixing objects together came around with the age of read/write culture. When artists stopped simply "reading" others art, but taking that and "writing" or responding to it with more art.
For this weeks assignment, I've taken these principals and combined several 3D objects created by others to create a new image.
Thing files for Gizo the Spider (Keychain for backpack) by Retrorobot - Thingiverse
Thing files for Printable Boot by clubclay - Thingiverse
My first object, combined a spider with realistic boots. It was the spider that caught my eye first, and when thinking about what I could combine with this that would not only add, but compliment it, I decided the little critter deserved his own boots.
Thing files for Grot Tank by AgentSmith99 - Thingiverse
Thing files for Rubber Duck by willie - Thingiverse
After seeing the example, "Shark Gun" by Christopher Schulz, I felt the string urge to make my own rendition. Ducks have become a recurring animal in my art, so I found a rubber duck as a base, then instinctively thought a tank would match it perfectly.
Rabbit by LaenorSama - Thingiverse
Thing files for Halo Helmet by big_red_frog - Thingiverse
Thingiverse - Digital Designs for Physical Objects - Thingiverse
While searching "Thingiverse" I tended to just download and collect things that caught my eye even if i didn't have an idea for them right away. In this case, I downloaded the bunny and helmet separately, then thought it would be funny to combine them. Since it's a riding helmet, I knew the bunny needed a vehicle, however thought it would be ironic to give him a scooter instead of a motorbike.
Mimic Gift Box Ornament by spazzhappy - Thingiverse
Thing files for Shutter sunglasses (curved) by Umake - Thingiverse
Thing files for Kirby Pen Holder AIO by mredig - Thingiverse
Upon finding a mimic while scrolling the pages of Thingiverse, I immediately remembered the Kirby on the main page, and felt the need to combine such a soft cute character with scary teeth. After finishing that, I still felt like an element was missing, and decided to add some fun glasses to dial down the scary aspect a little bit.
Thing files for Velociraptor 25mm by PaniniTheCat - Thingiverse
Thing files for Brock the Badger Bard by mz4250 - Thingiverse
The bard, and velociraptor I had collected pretty early on in my search, but isn't have any idea for. It wasn't until I brought the bard into Rhino that I found his accessories detachable, and knew just who to put them on. Once again I had fun combining the more scary dino, with goofy bard clothes.
Thing files for Realistic Alligator 3D Model by cstauff7567 - Thingiverse
Thing files for The Sparrow, a Steampunk Airship by osarusan - Thingiverse
I found the alligator first, however the initial object I wanted to combine it with didn't work out. It wasn't until I came across an airship that I realized the main body of the ship had a similar shape. And thus, a mechanical flying alligator was created.
Thing files for Eye Slime by schlossbauer - Thingiverse
Thing files for princess crown by mjmedien - Thingiverse
Thing files for Wandering Eye by Calrais - Thingiverse
Upon coming across a crown on the pages of Thingiverse, my immediate thought was that the spheres on top of the crown looked like eyeballs. But when initially searching for eyes, the large statue of an eye came up first. Deciding it was fate, I decided to put the eye crown on the Eyeball king.
Thing files for Samurai Mask by 3D_Artisans - Thingiverse
Thing files for Squirrel by schlossbauer - Thingiverse
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4403702
This mask was the first object I downloaded, as it was incredibly cool. It however took a long time before I found another object that it would fit on. In the end, i chose a squirrel, and to complement the Japanese oni mask, I added a katana as well.
Thing files for 28mm Undead Skeleton Warrior Grave Bases by BigMrTong - Thingiverse
Thing files for Ghost Booh by BODY-3D - Thingiverse
Hand Gestures by Mike-vom-Mars - Thingiverse
For my ninth object, I realized I had many animal elements in my objects, and so I downloaded a hand to bring in more variety. After searching for a little bit, I stumbled upon these hollow ghost objects, and realized they would be perfect finger puppets. To complete it, I places the hand and finger puppets on a grave, so give a fun twist on the zombie hand reaching out of the grave.
Thing files for Sit As a Vase by Phill_Luland_3D_Printed_Art - Thingiverse
Thing files for Cat Litter Box by Cliffstjohn - Thingiverse
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:30411/files
For my final object, I again was thinking about my lack of human elements, when I stumbled upon this lady statue. Without a head, I thought it would be perfect to combine with other objects. However, my idea of branching away from animals was short lived when I stumbled upon a cat. It was only after combining the two that I thought the squatting position was reminiscent of when a cat uses the litter box, so I added one as a final touch.
